Kenya’s Lakers Hockey Club and Western Jaguars on Saturday booked their sports in the finals of the 2023 Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC).
The two clubs will now join women and men’s defending champions Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Egypt’s Sharkia in the finals set to be played on Sunday.
Lakers will face off against GRA and Sharkia play Western Jaguars as curtains come down on 10-day tournament in Blantyre, Malawi.
The Lakers secured a spot in the women’s finals by defeating Nigeria’s Delta Queens 2-0, finishing second in the round-robin pool as the preliminary matches concluded.
Aurelia Opondo, scored in the 10th minute of the first quarter, giving Lakers an early lead. Pauline Ochieng sealed the victory for the Kisumu-based team in the 38th minute.
With this win, Lakers secured the second position with 14 points, trailing two points behind the leader and defending champions, GRA.
GRA dominated the Scorpions from Malawi with a 15-0 victory, securing the top spot.
The finals will see a rematch between GRA and Lakers after their 2-2 draw during the preliminary matches on Tuesday. Lakers must convert the draw into a win to claim their first African hockey title.
In the men’s category, the Western Jaguars staged a comeback from a 2-0 halftime deficit to force a 2-2 draw with defending champions Sharkia.
