Kenya’s Junior Stars secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2023 Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) Under-18 championships with a game to spare by narrowly defeating Rwanda 1-0 in a closely contested match at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu on Tuesday.
Spain Aldrine Kibet, with Nastic Sports Academy, showcased his skill by scoring in the first half and guiding Kenya to the last four.
Kibet’s goal in the 37th minute ignited celebration among the thousands of fans at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, and Kenya maintained the lead until the final whistle.
Coming off a decisive 5-0 victory against Sudan, Salim Babu’s team is now the first to reach the semifinals, topping Group A with six points and six goals.
At the same time, Somalia thrashed Sudan 3-0 to bounce back to winning ways.
Somalia are now in pole position to qualify for the semis if they can beat Kenya on Friday.
Somalia move second in the Group A standings with three points and two goals, Rwanda drop to third with three points and 0 goals.
