AFCON 2023: Ghana sack Chris Hughton after exit

Date:

Ghana has decided to part ways with head coach Chris Hughton following the national football team’s early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) made the announcement on Wednesday, revealing that not only has Hughton been relieved of his duties, but the entire technical team has also been dissolved.

Ghana’s disappointing campaign in the 2023 AFCON saw them secure just two points from three matches. They suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and managed 2-2 draws against both Egypt and Mozambique, finishing third in Group B. This unfortunate outcome mirrors their early exit in the 2021 edition of AFCON.

The decision to remove Hughton comes after a turbulent period, including a fan’s “verbal altercation” with the coach following the surprising loss to Cape Verde. Despite initial support from the GFA, Hughton’s tenure comes to an abrupt end.

Hughton, who took over as Ghana’s head coach in February last year, faced challenges not only in AFCON but also in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The team had a mixed start, securing a stoppage-time victory against Madagascar but suffering a 1-0 defeat in Comoros.

The GFA has promised to provide a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars in the coming days, as Ghana looks to regroup and chart a new course after this disappointing AFCON exit.
