AFCON 2023: Guinea edge 10-man Equatorial Guinea to qualify for quarterfinals

Date:

In a thrilling encounter that went down to the wire, Guinea narrowly edged out 10-man Equatorial Guinea 1-0, securing their spot in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2015.

The game’s defining moment came with practically the last kick of the match, as Mohamed Bayo headed home at the near post during deep stoppage time.

The first half was a cagey affair with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. Guinea’s Mohamed Bayo squandered an early opportunity, striking the side-netting, while Equatorial Guinea’s Saúl Coco hit the wall from a free-kick.

The second half brought a surge in intensity, and a pivotal moment occurred when Federico Bikoro received a straight red card for a high challenge, reducing Equatorial Guinea to 10 men for over 35 minutes.

AFCON’s top scorer, Emilio Nsue, had a chance to put Equatorial Guinea ahead, but he shockingly missed a penalty, striking the outside of the post.

Guinea seized the opportunity, bringing on Serhou Guirassy, whose bullet header was brilliantly saved by Jesús Owono.

However, it was Bayo who proved to be the hero, heading in the decisive goal deep into stoppage time.

Despite the setback of Bikoro’s red card, Guinea showcased resilience and determination, securing their place in the quarterfinals.

The dramatic victory will undoubtedly boost their confidence as they progress further in the tournament, leaving Equatorial Guinea to lament Nsue’s missed penalty as their AFCON journey comes to an end.
