AFCON 2023: DR Congo dances their way to the semifinals

Date:

In a thrilling quarterfinal clash at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) showcased their dominance with a resounding 3-1 victory over Guinea in Abidjan, securing their spot in the semifinals.

Sébastien Desabre’s men demonstrated their prowess by recording a fourth consecutive head-to-head win over the National Elephants.

The encounter began at a frantic pace, with Yoane Wissa missing an early chance for the Leopards. Guinea, however, capitalized on a contentious penalty awarded after Chancel Mbemba’s push on Mohamed Bayo.

Bayo confidently converted from the spot, giving Guinea the lead. Mbemba quickly made amends for his error, responding with a clinical strike just seven minutes later, leveling the score for DR Congo.

As halftime approached, DR Congo intensified their efforts, with Cédric Bakambu narrowly missing a chance to take the lead. The Leopards carried their momentum into the second half, earning a penalty after a foul on substitute Silas.

Wissa stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom-left corner, granting DR Congo a narrow advantage.

In a moment of brilliance, Arthur Masuaku sealed the victory for DR Congo with a sublime long-range free-kick that deceived Guinea’s goalkeeper Ibrahim Koné.

The 3-1 win allowed DR Congo to cruise through the closing stages and secure a spot in the AFCON semifinals for the first time since 2015. The victory marked a significant milestone for Sébastien Desabre’s men, who continue their impressive campaign in pursuit of AFCON glory.
