South Africa Blitzboks captain Siviwe Soyizwapi set for Singapore return

Date:

South Africa’s Sevens rugby stalwart, Siviwe Soyizwapi, is poised for a triumphant return to international action after being cleared to rejoin the Blitzboks squad for the upcoming HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament in Singapore from 3-5 May.

The seasoned captain, who has 51 world series tournaments under his belt, is eager to make his mark once again following a challenging recovery from a serious knee injury.

Soyizwapi’s journey back to full fitness has been filled with determination and perseverance. Having suffered a setback with a knee injury last August, the 31-year-old faced an arduous path of surgery and rehabilitation.

Now, with the green light to resume competitive play, Soyizwapi is elated to rejoin his teammates on the sevens circuit.

Reflecting on his road to recovery, Soyizwapi expressed his joy at being available for selection, stating, “At times my return felt so far away, and I’m very happy to be fit for selection again.” The seasoned campaigner had his sights set on numerous highlights for the 2024 season, including playing in front of hometown supporters in Cape Town, experiencing new stops on the circuit like Perth, and culminating in the Olympic Games in Paris.

Despite the setback of his injury, Soyizwapi’s determination to return to peak form never wavered. “I was always going to make a comeback – I had to give myself that opportunity,” he affirmed. The desire to retire from the game on his own terms, especially after the challenges of the pandemic-affected Tokyo Olympics, fueled Soyizwapi’s motivation during the grueling rehabilitation process.

During his time away from the field, Soyizwapi closely observed the Blitzboks’ performances in the 2024 series, feeling a mixture of frustration and longing to contribute as a leader. “It was really frustrating to watch,” he admitted. “Firstly, you want to be out there, playing with the team that you care for so much, and secondly you see from afar what the issues are, but you cannot do anything about them.”

Now, with the prospect of returning to the action in Singapore, Soyizwapi is relishing the opportunity to reignite his sevens career. “Yes, I am available again,” Soyizwapi beamed confidently. “I know there are no guarantees, and I take nothing for granted.”

Blitzboks head coach Philip Snyman will welcome back Soyizwapi’s experience and leadership, especially with key players like Rosko Specman also returning from injury. The reunion of seasoned players like Dylan Sage, who rejoins the squad from France, adds further depth and experience to the team.

Looking ahead to the tournament in Singapore, where he has tasted victory before, Soyizwapi is ready to make new memories. “I will feel like a debutant in some ways, after being out for so long and returning to the series for the first time,” he remarked.

In Singapore, South Africa will navigate a challenging pool featuring France, Spain, and Samoa. With Soyizwapi back in the mix, the Blitzboks will look to regain their winning form and set the stage for further success as the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series nears its conclusion.

As the countdown to Singapore begins, all eyes will be on Siviwe Soyizwapi as he returns to the sevens arena, bringing with him experience, resilience, and a hunger for victory. The stage is set for an exhilarating comeback for one of South Africa’s most esteemed rugby sevens stars.
