RS Berkane emerged victorious with a narrow 2-1 win over Zamalek in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup Final at the Berkane Municipal Stadium.
From the outset, the home side asserted their dominance, taking control of the game with relentless attacks. Their early pressure paid off when they were awarded a penalty in the opening 10 minutes, which skipper Issoufou Dayo confidently converted to give RS Berkane the lead.
Buoyed by the roaring support of the Moroccan faithful, the two-time champions continued to push forward, doubling their lead in the 32nd minute through a well-executed header by Adil Tahif from a corner delivered by Mohamed El Morabit.
However, Zamalek refused to be deterred, coming back from the halftime break with renewed determination. They quickly found a lifeline when Ahmed Sayed’s assist set up Seifeddine Jaziri for a powerful header that found the back of the net, reducing the deficit and injecting renewed vigor into the Egyptian side’s attack.
Despite Zamalek’s spirited efforts to find an equalizer, RS Berkane’s defense, marshaled by the experienced Dayo, stood firm, thwarting their opponents’ advances and preserving their slender lead until the final whistle.
Both teams continued to press forward, creating scoring opportunities, but resolute defending and missed chances ensured the scoreline remained 2-1 in favor of RS Berkane as the referee brought an end to a pulsating first leg.
With the stage now set for a highly anticipated second leg in Cairo, Zamalek will be eager to overturn the deficit and claim victory on home soil. Meanwhile, RS Berkane will be determined to hold onto their advantage and secure the Confederation Cup title.
As the countdown begins for the decisive return leg scheduled for Sunday, 19 May, football fans can expect another captivating clash between these two formidable sides, with the coveted trophy hanging in the balance.
