The StarTimes Uganda Premier League title race is wide open after SC Villa snatched registered a 2-1 comeback against URA on 14 May.
The win propelled them to the top of the table with 54 points, one point ahead of BUL and Vipers SC who are tied on 53 points at second and third place respectively.
SC Villa in the driver’s seat
The win against URA, thanks to late goals from Umar Lutalo and Kenneth Ssemakula, coupled with the dropping of points by rivals BUL and Kitara, puts them in pole position to claim their first championship since 2004.
A victory over NEC on Saturday 18 will secure the title for Villa, extending their record to 17 league wins. However, any slip-up could open the door for BUL or Vipers.
Vipers SC and BUL still in the hunt
Defending champions Vipers SC kept their title hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Busoga United on Tuesday. They need a win against Mbarara City on the final day and hope for favourable results elsewhere.
BUL also remain in contention after a goalless draw at Mbarara City. They face Busoga United in the Jinja derby on Saturday, needing a win to keep their title dream alive.
Relegation battle heats up
The relegation battle is also set for a dramatic conclusion. Busoga United’s loss to Vipers gives UPDF a lifeline in the fight to avoid the drop. The soldiers need a win over Maroons on the final day and hope that both Busoga and Gaddafi falter.
KCCA flex muscles
KCCA continued their impressive run with a dominant 4-0 victory over Wakiso Giants. While they can’t challenge for the title, they can finish the season strong with a win over Maroons in their final game.
Kitara’s title hopes dashed
Soltilo Bright Stars dented Kitara’s title aspirations with a 1-0 victory. The loss leaves Kitara out of the championship race, but they can still finish the season in fourth place with a win over Gaddafi in their final match.
