Lesotho achieved a significant 2-0 away win against Zimbabwe on Friday afternoon, taking them to the top of Group C in Africa’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The day also featured matches involving Mozambique and Kenya, with both teams eager to improve their standings in the quest for World Cup qualification.
The standout performance came from Group C, where Lesotho stunned Zimbabwe at Johannesburg Stadium in South Africa.
Rethabile Rasethuntsa scored the opening goal in the 21st minute, putting Lesotho ahead. Jane Thaba Ntso then increased their lead ten minutes later, securing the victory.
This crucial win lifts Lesotho to first place in Group C with five points from three matches, while Zimbabwe is at the bottom with two points.
In another Group C match, Nigeria and South Africa are set to face off later on Friday in Uyo, with both teams aiming to close in on the group leaders.
Over in Group G, Mozambique claimed a 2-1 victory against Somalia in Maputo. Alfons Amade scored in the 14th minute to give Mozambique the lead, followed by Stanley Ratifo’s goal in the 29th minute.
Although Somalia’s Ismail Shirwa managed to score in the 66th minute, Mozambique held firm for the win.
This result sees Mozambique tied on six points with group leaders Algeria and Guinea, who have also completed three matches. Somalia remains at the bottom without any points.
In Group F, Kenya and Burundi played to a 1-1 draw in a closely fought match in Lilongwe, Malawi.
Duke Abuya put Kenya ahead in the 72nd minute, but Abdallah Sudi equalized for Burundi 13 minutes later. The draw leaves Kenya in third place with four points, slightly ahead of Burundi based on goal difference.
Friday’s matches significantly impact the standings and each nation’s chances of securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup as the qualifying campaign progresses.
