Kenya secures vital 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in COSAFA Cup clash

In a thrilling encounter at Isaac Wolfson Stadium, Kenya’s Emerging Stars triumphed over Zimbabwe with a 2-0 victory in their final group stage match of the 2024 COSAFA Cup. This win marked a significant moment for the Kenyan team as they concluded their group stage campaign.

The first half saw both teams struggling to find the back of the net, resulting in a goalless draw at halftime. However, the second half brought a dramatic shift in momentum, with Kenya seizing control of the game.

The breakthrough came in the 54th minute when Ronney Onyango delivered a precise pass to Austine Odhiambo. Odhiambo made no mistake, slotting the ball into the net to give Kenya a 1-0 lead. This goal injected a surge of confidence into the Emerging Stars, who continued to press forward.

Kenya’s dominance was further solidified in the 73rd minute. A long ball from goalkeeper Byrne Omondi found Benson Omalla, who capitalized on the opportunity and added a second goal to Kenya’s tally. Omalla’s clinical finish ensured that Kenya maintained a comfortable lead, and the match ultimately ended 2-0 in favor of the Emerging Stars.

With this victory, Kenya finished Group B with six points, tied with Comoros. However, Comoros edged out Kenya on goal difference, securing the top spot in the group and advancing to the semi-finals as Group B winners.

Despite finishing second in the group, Kenya’s fate in the tournament now hinges on the results of other group matches, as they await to see if they will advance to the semi-finals as one of the best runners-up.

Kenya’s starting XI for the match included Byrne Omondi in goal, with defenders Amos Wanjala, Sylvester Owino, Alphonce Omija, and Geoffrey Onyango. The midfield was anchored by Chrispine Erambo, Kayci Odhiambo, and Ronney Onyango, while Austine Odhiambo, Hassan Beja, and Benson Ochieng led the attack.

Substitutes for the match were Dolph Owino, Ibrahim Wanzala, Jeremy Bisau, Aldrine Kibet, William Gitamu, Alfred Tanui, Patrick Otieno, Stanley Wilson, Moses Shumah, John Ochieng, and Elly Owand.
