Uganda has been crowned the 2024 Rugby Africa Sevens champions after securing a thrilling 20-17 victory over South Africa in the final at the Labourdonnais Sports Grounds in Mauritius.
This triumph marks Uganda’s fourth Africa Men’s 7s title and caps off an impeccable tournament run where they won all 12 of their matches.
Under the leadership of head coach Tolbert Onyango, Uganda showcased their dominance throughout the tournament, booking their place in the 2025 Challenger Series.
Heading into the final, the Ugandans were eager to complete a double over South Africa, having defeated them 12-0 in the semifinals last weekend.
Uganda started the final with impressive intensity, landing an early try on the right side. Alex Aturinda doubled their lead with a try in the left corner, putting Uganda ahead 10-0.
South Africa responded with Joubert Schoeman racing clear from his half to score, though they missed the conversion attempt.
Dennis Etwau then added another try for Uganda at the left corner, extending their lead to 15-5.
South Africa mounted a comeback in the second half, with Ricardo Duarttee racing to score, followed by another try from Sebastian Jobb, closing the gap.
However, Uganda’s resilience shone through as they won a crucial penalty in South Africa’s zone. Aaron Ofoywroth capitalized by picking up the ball at the back of the scrum and scoring the decisive try, sealing the 20-17 victory for Uganda.
Coach Tolbert Onyango praised his team’s performance, saying, “The boys showed incredible determination and composure throughout the tournament. Winning all our matches and securing the title is a testament to their hard work and dedication. We’re excited about the future and looking forward to competing in the 2025 Challenger Series.”
