The Junior Springboks are gearing up for their crucial playoff match against Argentina at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town this Sunday, with several strategic changes to their lineup.
The game, set to kick off at 14h00 and broadcast live on SuperSport, is a chance for the South African U20 team to avenge their earlier pool stage loss to the South Americans.
Head coach Bafana Nhleko has refreshed the squad, making notable adjustments, particularly in the front row.
Captain Zachary Porthen remains the constant figure, joined by prop Ruan Swart and hooker Ethan Bester in the starting trio. This new combination is aimed at providing a stronger and more dynamic scrum.
In the forwards, JF van Heerden transitions from lock to blindside flanker, forming a new-look loose trio with the returning Tiaan Jacobs at No. 8. These changes are designed to bring added strength and versatility to the pack.
Among the backs, Tyloor Sefoor steps in as the flyhalf, forming a new halfback partnership with Asad Moos. Other changes include Phillip-Albert van Niekerk at inside centre and Joel Leotlela on the right wing, while Michail Damon continues at fullback, offering consistency and stability.
The bench sees a balanced split of five forwards and three backs. Notably, Ezekiel Ngobeni returns after recovering from an injury sustained against Fiji, and Hassiem Pead is set to make his first appearance from the bench.
Nhleko explained the rationale behind these adjustments, highlighting the need for player rotation and the importance of providing opportunities for squad members to gain Test match experience.
“Some players haven’t had much game time, and this rotation allows them to experience Test match rugby against a strong Argentine team,” Nhleko stated. He also mentioned injuries to key players Likhona Finca and Thabang Mphafi, who are out for the rest of the competition, and Josh Boulle, who just missed out on being fit in time.
The head coach emphasized the importance of these changes for the team’s growth and development. “These adjustments provide the squad with another chance to gain valuable international experience, crucial for our future player pathway,” Nhleko added.
Reflecting on their recent game against England, Nhleko acknowledged the disappointment but noted the improved performance against Argentina. With two games left in the competition, the Junior Boks are determined to finish strong.
“We need to match our intensity with precise execution, creating opportunities to showcase our attacking capabilities,” Nhleko commented.
Having faced Argentina earlier in the tournament, the Junior Boks are well aware of the challenges posed by their South American opponents.
“Argentina draws energy from their mauls and breakdowns, so we must compete effectively in these areas to disrupt their momentum,” Nhleko pointed out. The focus will be on countering Argentina’s strengths and establishing control over key aspects of the game.
