CAF launches groundbreaking VAR academy to revolutionize African football officiating

Date:

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken a significant stride in its quest to elevate the standard of football officiating across the continent with the launch of the CAF VAR Academy Programme.

This forward-thinking initiative, part of CAF’s broader strategy to develop world-class match officials, aims to equip referees from all 54 Member Associations with the necessary theoretical and practical skills to effectively utilize Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR) technology.

The academy is set to roll out between September and October 2024, marking a pivotal moment in African football.

Building on the success of the recent CAF Africa Cup of Nations, which was globally recognized for its high-quality officiating, the CAF VAR Academy is poised to enhance the competence of referees, ensuring that Africa continues to produce elite officials for both international and national competitions.

The initiative underscores CAF’s commitment to the vision of its President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, to make African football globally competitive and self-sustaining.

Sarah Mukuna, CAF’s Director of Member Associations, highlighted the significance of this launch. “Outlined in Dr. Motsepe’s 8-Steps of his vision of making African football globally competitive and self-sustaining includes protecting the integrity and professionalising refereeing, as well as introducing appropriately priced Video Assistant Referees.

It is therefore with this in mind that CAF is proud to be launching this innovative initiative that signifies our commitment to making African football globally competitive, as envisioned by Dr. Motsepe,” Mukuna said.

The importance of officiating in the development of African football cannot be overstated. The recent CAF AFCON showcased the critical role that well-trained referees play in the success of the sport.

CAF’s comprehensive approach to football development includes various programmes and competitions across Africa, making it essential for match officials to be equipped with the latest officiating technology and education to remain on par with global standards.

The CAF VAR Academy will be attended by elite referees from across CAF’s 54 Member Associations, marking the first step towards the widespread introduction of VAR across the continent.

The rollout programme includes a series of workshops conducted across CAF’s Zonal Unions. Over 120 referees are expected to participate, with each Zonal Union hosting around 30 referees.

The workshop schedule for the CAF VAR Academy 2024 is as follows:

CECAFA: 23 – 27 September in Tanzania

COSAFA: 11 – 19 September in South Africa

WAFU A: 4 – 10 September / 12 – 18 October in Senegal

WAFU B: 01 – 07 September in Cote d’Ivoire

This continental drive is aimed at ensuring that referees from every corner of Africa are proficient in the use of VAR, thereby enhancing the integrity and professionalism of football officiating.

By introducing state-of-the-art officiating technology and training, CAF is laying the groundwork for a more competitive and self-sustaining African football landscape.

The benefits of this programme extend beyond the immediate improvement in officiating standards. The implementation of VAR will help mitigate controversies related to refereeing decisions, thus fostering a fairer and more transparent football environment.

This move aligns with global trends in football, where the use of technology in officiating is becoming increasingly prevalent.

Moreover, the CAF VAR Academy represents a significant investment in the professional development of African referees. By providing them with advanced training and exposure to cutting-edge technology, CAF is empowering these officials to perform at the highest levels of the sport.

This initiative not only enhances the credibility of African football but also boosts the confidence of players, coaches, and fans in the fairness and accuracy of match officiating.

In conclusion, the launch of the CAF VAR Academy Programme is a monumental step towards achieving Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s vision of making African football globally competitive.

By equipping referees with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively use VAR, CAF is ensuring that African football remains at the forefront of technological advancements in the sport.

This initiative is set to revolutionize officiating standards on the continent, paving the way for a brighter future for African football.
