Kabras Sugar were on Sunday crowned the 2024 Christie Sevens champions. The sugar men kicked off this year’s National Sevens Circuit campaign on the front foot by seeing off Kenya Harlequin 17-12 to win the Christie Sevens at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
Patrick Lumumba, who was instrumental for the sugar millers during their unbeaten 2023-2024 Kenya Cup season, gave Kabras a 5-0 lead after going over the whitewash for an unconverted try. Griffins Chao then stretched the lead to 10-0 with a brilliant play before Erick Cantona added the extras, extending the score to 12-0.
Kenya Harlequin, however, showed resilience. Amon Wamalwa responded with a try, and shortly afterward, he scored again, tying the scores at 12-12. Kabras, determined to reclaim their title, had the final say when Kenya Sevens star William Muhanji made a spectacular run from his own half before offloading to Cantona, securing the winning try.
The victory marks a triumphant return to the top for Kabras Sugar, reclaiming the Christie Sevens title they last won in 2017.
In other results, the Catholic Monks finished third after defeating Strathmore Leos 10-5 in the third-place playoffs dubbed the ‘University Derby,’ while defending series champions KCB finished fifth with a 29-12 win over Menengai Oilers.
