Morocco’s Soufiane Rahimi has made Olympic football history by winning the Golden Boot at the Paris 2024 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament, finishing as the top scorer with an impressive eight goals.
His outstanding performance was capped off with a brace in Morocco’s commanding 6-0 victory over Egypt in the bronze medal match on Thursday.
The 28-year-old striker, who plays for Al Ain, was instrumental in securing Morocco’s first-ever Olympic football medal.
His consistency throughout the tournament saw him become the first player in the competition’s history to score in six consecutive matches, an achievement that has solidified his place as one of the tournament’s standout players.
Rahimi’s goal-scoring prowess was pivotal in Morocco’s journey to the semi-finals, where they narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
Despite this setback, Rahimi and his teammates made history by claiming the bronze medal, an accomplishment that has drawn comparisons to Morocco’s inspiring run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Following the bronze medal match, Morocco playmaker Ilias Akhomach praised Rahimi’s contributions to the team’s success.
“Rahimi is great, he’s something else. I’ve played alongside him in other competitions. I knew what he was capable of, and we had a very good understanding between us at these Games. He has had an excellent tournament,” Akhomach said.
The atmosphere at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes was electric, with fans drawing parallels between the passionate support seen during Morocco’s World Cup campaign and the backing the Atlas Lions received at the Olympics.
Rahimi’s record-breaking goal-scoring feat will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the highlights of the Paris 2024 Olympics, and his contributions have firmly established him as a key figure in Moroccan football history.
