The 2024/25 CAF Interclub season began with a bang over the weekend, featuring thrilling preliminary round action across the continent.
The first leg fixtures of both the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup provided plenty of goals and high-quality football, setting the stage for an exciting campaign.
On Sunday, August 18, Egyptian giants Pyramids FC made a statement in the CAF Champions League by dismantling Zanzibar’s JKU SCZ with a commanding 6-0 victory.
The emphatic win all but secured Pyramids’ progression to the next round, leaving the islanders with a near-impossible task in the return leg.
Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Remo Stars also made headlines with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Moroccan side AS Far. The Nigerian outfit showcased resilience and tactical discipline to secure an important home win, giving them a slender advantage heading into the return leg.
In other notable CAF Champions League action, former champions Orlando Pirates were held to a surprising goalless draw by Madagascar’s Disciples FC.
The result was a disappointment for the South African side, who had hoped to make a strong start after their early exit in last season’s competition. They will now have to regroup ahead of the decisive return leg in Soweto.
Meanwhile, in the CAF Confederation Cup, Zimbabwe’s Dynamos FC claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Zambian heavyweights Zesco United in a southern African showdown. The match was tightly contested, but Dynamos’ solitary goal gave them a crucial edge ahead of the second leg.
Liberia’s Paynesville FC enjoyed a dominant 4-0 win over Cameroon’s Fovu De Baham, while Ghana’s Nsoatreman FC cruised to a 3-0 victory against Chad’s Elect Sport. Both teams will head into their return legs with a comfortable cushion.
The weekend also saw a thrilling 2-2 draw between Togo’s ASCK and Niger’s AS Fan in the CAF Confederation Cup. The evenly matched contest featured plenty of chances, with both goalkeepers playing pivotal roles in keeping their teams in the tie. The return leg promises to be another exciting tactical battle.
As the CAF Interclub season unfolds, fans across the continent can look forward to more drama, goals, and unforgettable moments in the race for African football supremacy.
