The Springboks have turned their attention to the upcoming Tests against New Zealand after a strong start to the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, securing two bonus-point victories against Australia.
Despite their early success, key players Cheslin Kolbe and Marco van Staden emphasized the importance of staying grounded and focused on the challenges ahead.
South Africa currently tops the Rugby Championship table after impressive wins over the Wallabies in Brisbane and Perth.
The Springboks registered a commanding 33-7 victory in Brisbane, followed by a 30-12 win in Perth, overcoming tough weather conditions. While the team is pleased with their performance, they acknowledge that the real test is yet to come.
“We are very excited that we could build on last week’s result, and it was particularly pleasing with all the players getting opportunities to play,” said Kolbe.
“It was special, but there’s a lot more to come. We certainly couldn’t have asked for a better start in the competition, especially winning two games away from home, but we have to progress as the competition goes on.”
Kolbe stressed the need for the team to remain focused and avoid complacency as they prepare to face New Zealand in South Africa.
“We’ll keep our feet on the ground and continue working hard in the weeks leading up to the games against New Zealand, which is going to be massive,” he added. “As a team, we are looking forward to giving back in South Africa at the packed stadiums.”
Echoing Kolbe’s sentiments, van Staden, who scored his second Test try for South Africa in Perth, highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum.
“It feels great for us as a group to get such a good start to the competition, but the work is not done,” said the flanker.
“We still have a few big games to go, and we are looking forward to the next step. That said, to leave Australia with 10 points definitely gives us confidence going forward.”
Kolbe also praised the Springboks’ coaching staff for their belief in the entire squad, noting that nearly all players, except for RG Snyman who was sidelined with a foot injury, had the opportunity to contribute.
“It was nice to see some of the young guys put up their hands, and they definitely showed that they want to be here and stay here, which is exciting from a player point of view,” Kolbe said.
The Springboks will depart for South Africa in two groups on Sunday and Monday, with the full squad set to regroup in Johannesburg on Thursday.
Their preparation will intensify ahead of the highly anticipated Tests against the All Blacks, scheduled for August 31 in Johannesburg and September 7 in Cape Town.
As the competition heats up, the Springboks are determined to build on their early success and continue their strong push for Rugby Championship glory.
