The Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) celebrated its 12th Anniversary during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Zetech University on 28, August 2024.

The event, which drew influential figures from local football, underscored KEFWA’s ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of Kenyan footballers.

Among the notable attendees were former national team coaches Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee and Robert Matano, who both commended KEFWA for its persistent efforts in championing the rights and well-being of players.

Mulee highlighted the importance of such an association in the general growth of Kenyan football, especially in times when players face adversities.

“I am genuinely impressed with the efforts of KEFWA and hold great pride in the leadership of KEFWA President Situma James and Vice President Terry Ouko. Their dedication to improving football in Kenya is commendable,” Mulee said.

Robert Matano, who also handled Harambee Stars at some point in his stellar coaching career, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of creating a support system for active and retired players.

“I am truly pleased with the efforts KEFWA is making, and I appreciate the collaboration with KEFOCA and KENFOC, where I serve as chairman,” Matano said.

Matano challenged active athletes to join the KEFWA bandwagon and reap the benefits.

“This unity is crucial for harmonising our issues, especially as we navigate the inevitable ups and downs. To the players, maintain your focus and determination. I strongly encourage both current and former players to join KEFWA as members. By doing so, you’ll help empower the association to effectively advocate for our rights, thanks to the strong leadership in place.”

Robert Matano also had a word for local coaches handling professional football clubs in the country.

“To the coaches, I urge you to be truthful and straightforward in your dealings. Treat all players equally and avoid favouritism, as fairness is essential for a cohesive team environment. Let’s not overlook important initiatives such as Club Licensing, which are designed with the best intentions for our clubs. Unity is key our collective experience is invaluable and cannot be bought. Embrace and consider every idea brought to the table to ensure we make progress together.”

During the AGM, active players were encouraged to register with KEFWA to access various benefits, particularly as they plan for life after football. The association emphasised the importance of saving for the future, noting that many players struggle financially once they retire from the sport.

James Situma, the President of KEFWA, took the opportunity to outline the association’s progress and future plans. He expressed enthusiasm for the organisation’s new partnerships, which aim to further protect players from exploitation.

“We are excited about our new partnerships, including the collaboration with FIFPRO and the Didier Drogba Foundation to combat fake agents and protect players,” Situma said.

He also highlighted KEFWA’s nomination for the FIFPRO 2023 Union Impact Award, calling it a proud moment for the association. “This nomination recognises our efforts to enhance player well-being and motivates us to continue striving for better conditions for our players.”

Situma also spoke about the international exposure KEFWA has gained through engagements with global football stakeholders. “These international engagements have broadened our perspective. Visits to Italy, Malaysia, and discussions with global football stakeholders have enriched our approach.”

Meanwhile, the AGM served as a platform for current and former players to interact, exchange ideas, and learn about the opportunities available through KEFWA.
