South Sudan mourns basketballer Dominik Philip

Former South Sudan men’s national team player Dominik Philip has died at the age of 29, the country’s basketball federation announced on Tuesday March 11, 2025.

Born on August 27, 1995, Philip played four games for Bright Stars of South Sudan in the 2021 AfroBasket Pre-Qualifiers Zone 5 in January 2020 in Nairobi, Kenya, averaging 6.3 points, 1.8 and 1.5 assists per game.

In a statement, the South Sudan Basketball Federation paid tribute to Philip. It said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of one of national team players Dominik Philip who represented the men’s national team at the start of our journey in 2020 in Zone 5 AfroBasket qualifiers.”

“Dominik represented the country with an incredible amount of passion and humility catching the fans eyes with his incredible jumping ability and dunks.”

“From all of us at the Federation, we send our condolences to his family and friends. RIP Dominik, you will be greatly missed by so many,” the statement read.

Philip was among the early group of players who helped lay the foundation for South Sudan’s rise in international basketball.

His contributions, both on and off the court, were recognized by teammates and supporters alike.
