The fifth Betika AK Track and Field Weekend Meet will be hosted by Athletics Kenya Nairobi Region on Friday and Saturday at Ulinzi Sports Complex. This will mark the return of high level competition in the city ahead of the Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour Kenya leg next month.
The meeting sponsored by Betika has a prize purse kitty of KES1,170,000 bringing together athletes in nine track events and four field events, Gideon Nyangechi, Athletics Kenya Nairobi County first vice chairman announced today after a planning meeting at Riadha House.
The meeting will reward the top three athletes in each category at a rate of KES20, 000 for the winner, KES15, 000 for second and KES10, 000 for third place.
“All athletes are required to collect their running/bib numbers on Thursday 24th April 2025, at the event venue starting from 9:00 am to 6:00pm. Please note that registration and issuance of running/bib numbers will not be conducted on the event days,” said Nyangechi.
The Nyayo National Stadium is unavailable as an upgrade work of a new running track starts.
Nyangechi said the meeting will be run under World Athletics and Athletics Kenya standards as this will be the ideal opportunity of serious competition for athletes who are preparing for Athletics Kenya regional meetings to select teams for the national championships and later the national trials for the World Championships in Athletics in Tokyo, Japan, in September 13-21 this year.
At the same time, Nyangechi and the entire AK Nairobi County executive committee wished their chairman Barnaba Korir and the team he is supporting success in the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) elections on Thursday.
Korir who has also been endorsed by Athletics Kenya, is vying for the position of the Vice President in the Shadrack Maluki led camp which also has the president of the Kenya Table Tennis Association (KTTA) Andrew Mudibo running for the post of the secretary general.
This team is facing the current secretary general group of Francis Mutuku who has stood against Maluki.
Anthony “Jamal” Otieno, president of the Boxing Federation of Kenya, is vying for first vice president post, Outgoing NOCK deputy secretary general Shoiab Vayani is contesting for treasurer.
