Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon unleashed her trademark final lap to claim a historic fourth world women’s 1500m title in Tokyo on Tuesday.
The three-time Olympic champion stormed to victory in 3:52.15, adding yet another gold to her glittering collection and cementing her status among the greatest middle-distance runners of all time.
Kipyegon’s compatriot Dorcus Ewoi took silver in 3:54.92, while Australian Jessica Hull claimed bronze in (3:55.16).
Another Kenyan, Nelly Chepchirchir, crossed the line fourth in 3:55.25, also achieving a personal best.
Australia’s Jessica Hull edged out Nelly Chepchirchir for bronze, finishing in 3:55.16, just milliseconds ahead of the Kenyan who placed fourth in 3:55.25.
The triumph marked Kenya’s third gold medal at the championships, further cementing the country’s standing in distance running.
On Sunday, September 14, Kipyegon ran a test in the women’s 1500m semi-final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships and expressed optimism that the Kenyan team, including Nelly Chepchirchir and Dorcas Ewoi, is well-prepared to execute the tactics needed for a 1-2-3 finish.
Kipyegon becomes only the second woman to win four world titles in the same track event after Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who has won five 100m titles.
