The Hub Karen Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, was the scene of extraordinary endurance and community spirit this past weekend as it hosted a 24-hour nonstop fitness challenge in support of people with disabilities.

From 11am on Saturday to 11am Sunday, Kenyan-born former British Army soldier Jonathan Leonard undertook an incredible feat — 24 continuous hours of burpees. Leonard, 34, founder of the Mazoezi for Mobility Challenge and now a crisis and security consultant in East Africa, said the initiative was inspired by the resilience of Kenyans living with disabilities.

Nearly one in 10Kenyans lives with a disability, often facing daily challenges to mobility, opportunity, and dignity. Leonard’s challenge sought to raise both awareness and funds to support their inclusion.

Leonard explained that the challenge aims to raise KES1 million to benefit each of the two charities, noting that they had already achieved 60 percent of the target by the weekend.

“My motivation is to bring the community together and support people with disabilities who often lack access to hope. What stands out about Kenya is the spirit of togetherness and community, which surpasses everything else,” Leonard said.

The challenge didn’t have significant breaks, but participants were allowed to take a break after each hour to use restrooms and take meals.

“At The Hub Karen, community means showing up for one another. This challenge reflects our commitment to standing with people with disabilities, and we are proud to host it here,” The Hub Karen general manager Jacobus Visser said.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Riziki Source and the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), organizations that provide mobility aids, promote inclusion, and create dignified work opportunities for people with disabilities.

The event was made possible through the support of partners including Furniture Palace, SmartGyms, Adidas, Healthy U, Decathlon, and USN — all based at The Hub Karen Mall.
