There was double joy for Kenyan athletes at the 2025 Valencia Marathon as John Korir claimed his second win of the season in the men’s race before Joyciline Jepkosgei set a new world lead to win the women’s race.

John Korir of Kenya won the men’s race, clocking a personal best of 2:02:24, while compatriot Joyciline Jepkosgei took down the course record in the women’s race, running 2:14:00.

“People are saying the Korir name is going down but I have come here and proved to them that Korir is still there, I’ve closed my year with a PB. I enjoy myself here in Valencia,” said Korir in a post-race interview.

In second place was World Championships silver medallist Amanal Petros of Germany, who has enjoyed a strong season. Petros broke his own German national record by 55 seconds, clocking 2:04:03.

In the women’s race, Jepkosgei and fellow Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir, the reigning world champion, went clear together early and stuck together for most of the race.

But it was Jepkosgei who made the winning move in the final kilometres to distance Jepchirchir, winning in a world-leading 2:14:00.

“I’m so excited, it’s so amazing to win this race with a personal best time, I don’t know what to say,” said Jepkosgei after the race.
