Hosts Uganda and Ethiopia have emerged winners of the CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA qualifiers.
After seeing off 2024 winners Tanzania at the semi final stage, Uganda were the better side during the penalty shootout deciders against Ethiopia in the Boys’ final to win 3-2 after the match had ended goalless at the St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
Tanzania settled for bronze in the boys’ play-off after defeating Burundi 2-0.
In the Girl’s category Tanzania and Ethiopia battled to a goalless draw. But the Ethopian side led by Lukia Seleman were a better side in penalty kicks winning 5-4.
“We are very happy that after losing the final last year, we have managed to win the trophy this time,” said a happy Seleman who was voted Best goalkeeper for the Girl’s category.
The Ugandan team defeated Burundi 2-0 to win bronze and a cash prize of US$50,000.
Alexandre Muyenge, the Acting President of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) said the Championship was very competitive.
“We are happy that eight nations participated in the Championship and we are hopeful our winners will represent the Zone well at continental level next year,” added Muyenge.
The Awards were presented by the CECAFA Acting President Muyenge, Vice President and President of the Eritrea National Football Federation Weldehaimanot Andemariam, CECAFA Excom member Petra Doris Atieno, FUFA’s 1st Vice President Mugisha and TotalEnergies Strategy and New Energies Manager, Carol Katungi.
