Lady golfers took centre stage at the scenic Nyanza Golf Club in Kisumu as Lunar Magero emerged the overall winner of the Nyanza Ladies Medal in a colorful tournament played along the shores of Lake Victoria.

The event, organised by Nyanza Golf Club Lady Captain Lina Akello, attracted more than 50 golfers and highlighted the growing strength of women’s golf in the region.

While the focus was on the ladies’ competition, men also took part in subsidiary action, adding excitement across the lush fairways.

Magero claimed the Overall Winner (Ladies) title with an impressive score of 65, holding her nerve in a competitive field.

She finished ahead of Serah Owour, who returned 67 to take the 1st Runner-up slot, while Naomi Odera settled for 2nd Runner-up on 68.

In the Gross category, Dr. Rosemary Obara stood out with a score of 84 gross to take top honours.

Speaking after her win, Magero said patience and focus were key to her strong performance.
“I kept my game simple and stayed calm from the first hole to the last,” said Magero.

“The course was in good condition, but you still have to think about every shot. I avoided big mistakes and my putting really helped me today. I am very happy to win among such strong lady golfers.”

Lady Captain Akello praised the turnout and the spirit shown by the players, saying the medal competition is an important platform for women golfers.

“This Ladies Medal means a lot to us,” said Akello. “It brings lady golfers together, helps us build friendship and unity, and also supports the growth of the game in this region. We want more ladies to play golf, and events like this give them confidence and motivation.”

She added that the club hopes to make the Ladies Medal a regular feature on the calendar.

“Our vision is to have this medal played regularly. We have talent in Nyanza and beyond, and we want to keep giving these ladies opportunities to compete and improve their game,” Akello said.

In the men’s subsidiary competition, Don Riaroh carded 65 to emerge the Subsidiary Winner, while Clifford Agumbi followed closely with 66 to take the runner-up spot.

Their contest added to the lively atmosphere on the course as players battled both the layout and the warm lakeside weather.

Several special prizes were also awarded. Nick Odhiambo won the Longest Drive (Men) prize after a powerful tee shot that drew cheers from fellow golfers. In the ladies’ category, Dr. Rosemary Obara added another trophy to her day by claiming the Longest Drive (Lady) award.

Julius Omollo showed great accuracy to win Nearest to the Pin (Man), while Sally Hawi took the Nearest to the Pin (Lady) prize with a well-controlled shot that left her ball close to the hole.

The tournament ended with smiles, photos and celebrations at the clubhouse, with many players already looking forward to the next ladies’ event.

With strong participation, good performances and clear support from club leadership, the Nyanza Ladies Medal proved to be more than just a competition. It was a sign that women’s golf in the region is growing steadily, driven by passion, unity and the desire to see more ladies step onto the course.
