Former Morocco captain Romain Saïss has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 34, bringing to an end a career that spanned more than a decade and helped redefine the country’s standing on the global stage.

The central defender confirmed his decision in a message posted on Instagram, describing his time with the Atlas Lions as “the most beautiful chapter” of his career.

Saïss earned 86 caps for Morocco and captained the side during one of the most successful periods in the nation’s football history, including their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar — the first African team to reach that stage of the tournament.

The former Atlas Lions captain wrote: “Today I conclude the most beautiful chapter of my football life. After deep reflection, I announce with great emotion my retirement from international football. Wearing the Moroccan national team jersey and leading it will remain the greatest honour of my career.

Having made his debut with little fanfare, Saïss gradually became a cornerstone of Morocco’s defence and a respected leader within the squad.

Known for his combative style and organisational discipline, he played a key role in guiding a new generation of players through a transformative era.

Beyond the 2022 World Cup achievement, Saïss also led Morocco during recent TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations campaigns, including a final appearance in continental competition earlier this year.

His leadership coincided with significant structural development in Moroccan football, including major investment in infrastructure and youth development programmes.

In his farewell message, Saïss thanked teammates, coaches, technical and medical staff, and those working behind the scenes. However, he reserved special praise for Moroccan supporters.

He credited their passion and unwavering support with helping the team surpass expectations in decisive moments.

Saïss also reflected on the broader progress of the national game, highlighting the advances made in training facilities and organisational standards that have positioned Morocco among Africa’s leading football nations.

He said: “For me, this shirt transcends the boundaries of sports; it is a story of roots, family, and heart. Every time I wore it, I felt the weight of responsibility, but above all, an indescribable pride.”

“I have always dreamed of these moments since I was young. I did everything I could for this flag and this country that has given me so much, always guided by my love for my country and my respect for its people.”

His departure signals the end of an era for the Atlas Lions, but also marks a generational transition as younger players step into leadership roles.

“I am leaving the national team, but I will remain a Lion for eternity,” Saïss concluded.
