Gor Mahia FC strengthened their grip on the FKF Premier League (SportPesa League) title race with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Mathare United in an entertaining clash staged at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The match lived up to its billing, delivering tension, drama, and late twists that kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Gor Mahia dominated large spells of possession in the opening half, but Mathare United remained disciplined at the back, frustrating the record champions and ensuring the teams went into the break locked at 0–0.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 67th minute when Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Assifuah found space inside the area and calmly slotted home, sparking wild celebrations among the K’Ogalo faithful. The goal seemed to tilt momentum firmly in Gor’s favour, but Mathare United refused to fold.
With eight minutes left on the clock, Mathare’s persistence paid off. Dennis Okoth rose to the occasion and struck the equaliser in the 82nd minute, silencing the home crowd and setting up a tense finale.
Just when the contest appeared headed for a draw, Gor Mahia were handed a lifeline after a foul inside the box resulted in a penalty. Midfielder Enock Morrison stepped up with confidence and converted from the spot in the 87th minute, restoring the lead and ultimately sealing all three points for the hosts.
