Concern has gripped Kenyan women’s football after Lowland Starlets were involved in a serious road accident while travelling to honour their National Super League fixture against Bunyore Starlets.

What began as a routine journey to Luanda, Busia County, quickly turned into a nightmare when the team bus overturned at Chebilat.

Images that have since circulated online paint a chilling picture — the yellow bus lying on its side, personal belongings strewn across the tarmac, and players left to process the shock of a moment that changed everything in an instant.

The bus was reportedly carrying around 30 members of the team. Thirteen players sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kaplong Hospital in Bomet County, where they are currently receiving treatment. The injuries are understood to include fractures and other significant trauma, raising immediate concern across the football community.

Members of the technical bench were also affected, with the team manager reportedly suffering a dislocated arm. The remaining 17 occupants escaped with minor injuries and are being transported back to the team’s base in Nyamira County.

As the news broke, an outpouring of support swept across social media, with players, clubs, and fans rallying behind the team. Messages of encouragement and prayers for recovery have continued to pour in, reflecting the deep sense of unity within Kenya’s women’s football circles. In a space that has long fought for visibility and recognition, moments like these bring the community even closer together.

The Football Kenya Federation has issued a statement expressing its wishes for a swift recovery for the injured and affirming its commitment to continue supporting the team.

Beyond the immediate shock, the incident has once again highlighted the realities many teams face off the pitch. Travel remains one of the most overlooked yet critical aspects of the game, and for many clubs, long journeys under challenging conditions are part of the routine. This accident now raises difficult but necessary questions about player welfare, safety standards, and the level of support structures in place within the league.

For the players involved, football is more than just competition — it is a pathway, a passion, and for many, a dream in motion. To see that journey interrupted in such a manner is a stark reminder of the risks that exist beyond the spotlight of match day.

For now, the focus remains firmly on recovery. Medical teams continue to monitor those hospitalised, while teammates, opponents, and fans alike hold onto hope for positive updates. In a game often defined by results and rivalries, this moment serves as a powerful reminder of what truly matters.

Because sometimes, football pauses — and humanity takes centre stage.
