Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Egypt’s Sharkia Hockey Club are the 2023 Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) winners.
GRA were crowned the winners of the women’s edition after a controversial coin toss decision made by the Africa Hockey Federation (AFH).
This was after Lakers Hockey Club from Kenya was thrown out of the tournament on Sunday and replaced by fellow country mates Blazers Hockey Club, a move the former did not agree with.
According to AFH, Blazers, Delta Queens from Nigeria filed a complaint seek the disqualification of Lakers who were unbeaten for fielding ineligible players.
Surprisingly, there is no rule in the Guidelines stipulated in the AHF Africa Cup for Club Champions Rules and Regulations 2018 that bar Lakers from beefing up their squad for the continental showpiece.
In the finals, Lakers stormed the field I protest when GRA were warming up to play Blazers, forcing the AFH to decide the final on coin toss.
No reasons have been given so far by Kenya Hockey Federation and Africa Hockley Federation on the way forward.
As it stands, GRA wins gold, Blazers silver and Delta Queens bronze.
In the men’s category, Egyptian champions Sharkia won 3-2 against Kenya’s Western Jaguars.
