South Africa, the current champions of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, will defend their title in Morocco next year.
Linda Mothlalo and Nicole Michael secured a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in the return leg held in the nation’s capital on Monday.
The teams had previously drawn 1-1 in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire, setting the stage for a decisive battle.
In the first half at Pretoria’s Lucas Moripe Stadium, both teams were evenly matched. However, the defending champions took control in the second half with Motlhalo’s 55th-minute goal and Michael’s 63rd-minute goal, securing their spot in the prestigious competition in Morocco.
In another qualifier, Algeria secured a 1-0 away win against Burundi, ensuring their return to the competition after missing out on the 2022 edition in Morocco.
With a comfortable 5-1 lead from the home leg, the North Africans executed a game plan to dominate possession from the start. In the 17th minute, Ines Boutaleb scored the only goal of the match, sealing a two-legged victory for Algeria and earning them a place in Morocco next year.
The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, Morocco 2024 qualifiers, will continue on Tuesday to determine which teams will advance to the prestigious women’s national team competition.
