The 2025/26 LALIGA EA SPORTS season came to an end this past weekend, and all the main storylines from Matchday 38 are summarised below along with the rest of the week’s Spanish football news.
RCD Mallorca and Girona FC are relegated to LALIGA HYPERMOTION
The relegation battle went down to the final matchday, with five clubs entering Matchday 38 still at risk of ending up in one of the final two relegation spots. In the end, it was RCD Mallorca and Girona FC who finished 18th and 19th, joining Real Oviedo in going down to the second tier of Spanish football.
Getafe CF return to Europe
Higher up in the standings, Getafe CF defeated CA Osasuna 1-0 to clinch seventh place and a ticket to next season’s Conference League. It means Los Azulones will be back in continental competition for the first time since the 2019/20, a feat also achieved under José Bordalás.

RC Celta qualify for the Europa League again
Finishing in sixth place and earning a spot in next season’s Europa League was RC Celta. The Galician outfit defeated Sevilla FC 1-0, a result which was enough for them to return to the competition they reached the quarter-finals of this year.
Villarreal CF finish in third place
There was a showdown between Villarreal CF and Atlético de Madrid on Sunday night, with third place at stake. And, El Submarino Amarillo put in a brilliant performance to win 5-1 and to earn a top-three finish, their first since 2007/08, with Atleti ending the season in fourth.

Kylian Mbappé retains his Pichichi title
One more thing which was decided during the final matchday was the top scorer award in LALIGA EA SPORTS. Kylian Mbappé has retained the title he won last year, finishing with 25 goals. That was two more than the 23 of RCD Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi.
RC Deportivo return to LALIGA EA SPORTS
We also learned the identity of another of the promoted teams, with RC Deportivo securing their return to LALIGA EA SPORTS with one matchday to spare in LALIGA HYPERMOTION. The Galician side are back in the top flight for the first time since 2017/18, joining Real Racing Club in grabbing an automatic promotion spot.
The Bernabéu bids farewell to Dani Carvajal and David Alaba
Real Madrid finished their season with a 4-2 home win against Athletic Club, with the fans at the Bernabéu also making sure to give Dani Carvajal and David Alaba a fitting sendoff. Both defenders will leave the club this summer and were treated to standing ovations.

Fermín López will miss the World Cup
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente will announce his World Cup squad on Monday, but we already know that FC Barcelona midfielder Fermín López won’t be in it. The 23-year-old suffered a fracture of his fifth metatarsal and will miss the summer tournament, a real shame after he had such a good season for his club.
Rayo Vallecano prepare for the Conference League final
This coming week will be a historic one for Rayo Vallecano. The club from Spain’s capital will contest their first ever European final, taking on Crystal Palace in the Conference League final in Leipzig this Wednesday. The squad prepared in the best way possible, by winning their Matchday 38 fixture, a 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alavés.

There was plenty to celebrate at FC Barcelona this week, with the Catalan club’s women’s team winning the 2025/26 Women’s Champions League. Barça defeated Lyon 4-0 in the final, earning their fourth victory in this competition.
