The Eritrean government has announced that the 2026 Asmara Marathon will be held on the streets of the capital on 7 June.

Colonel Solomon Seium, Head of National Federations and Olympic and Paralympic Committees Follow-up at the Commission of Culture and Sports, stated that this would be the seventh iteration of the marathon, with athletes from five nations – Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Uganda – anticipated to participate.

Colonel Seium also announced that, for the first time, a 21 km race for female athletes would be organised. He further stated that competitions for athletes with disabilities and a three-kilometre mass participation event would also be incorporated into the Asmara Marathon 2026.

Colonel Seium further confirmed that the East African Half Marathon, which Eritrea is organising, has received official recognition from World Athletics, thereby signifying a new phase in the development of athletics within the country.

Efrem Tekeste, President of the Athletics Federation of Eritrea, affirmed that the race route had been approved by World Athletics and that records would be officially documented commencing with this competition.
