Kabras Sugar RFC secured their first title of the 2026 National Sevens Circuit, reclaiming the Dala 7s crown by defeating Menengai Oilers 17-5 in a come-from-behind victory. The final took place on Sunday, 2 August 2026, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu.
This “RAI Derby” renewed a rivalry last seen in the 2024 tournament final, where Kabras triumphed over Menengai Oilers 24-5. Two years later, the Oilers sought revenge, while Kabras aimed to reclaim the title after losing last year’s final to KCB Rugby at the same venue.
The opening half was a cagey and physical affair, with both teams displaying disciplined defensive lines and creating few clear-cut opportunities.
Menengai Oilers eventually broke the deadlock just seconds before half-time when John Okoth burst through the Kabras defence on the left to score the opening try. Glacious Owino’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the Oilers with a narrow 5-0 lead at the break.
Kabras responded immediately after the restart, exploiting the same channel Menengai had used in the first half after the teams switched ends. Jackson Siketa offloaded to Rayvone Ambale, who raced over for the equalising try. However, Ambale failed to add the conversion, keeping the scores level at 5-5.
The turning point occurred moments later when Menengai Oilers’ Calvin Mulewa was sent to the sin bin, leaving his side with a numerical disadvantage. Kabras swiftly capitalised; Mathias Osimbo offloaded to Derrick Ashihundu, who beat John Okoth before grounding the ball on the left. Ambale successfully converted, giving Kabras a 12-5 lead.
Ronald Wangila then sealed the victory, collecting Patrick Lumumba Sabatia’s offload to score Kabras’ third try. Although the conversion drifted wide, Kabras comfortably held on to secure a 17-5 win and reclaim the Dala 7s crown.
Kabras captain Griffin Chao described the victory as the perfect response to the previous weekend’s disappointment in the Prinsloo 7s final.
“It’s been a hard fight, especially after last week’s final loss. We had to work it out; we had to make sure that we win this leg and we did it, and we are happy for it,” said Chao.
This triumph marked Kabras’ first title of the 2026 National Sevens Circuit, reclaiming a trophy they last won in 2024, having finished runners-up to KCB Rugby in last year’s final at the same venue.
