Zamalek head coach Jose Gomes lauded the exceptional quality of play in the CAF Confederation Cup final after his team secured a narrow 1-0 victory over RS Berkane on Sunday, earning their second title in the competition’s history.
The Portuguese tactician attributed his side’s triumph to their intense focus and determination, which proved crucial in overturning a 2-1 first-leg deficit. Gomes commended his players’ mentality and resilience as they clinched the win in front of a fervent home crowd at Cairo International Stadium.
“The team started very strongly, and we could have scored more goals in the first half,” Gomes remarked. “African football deserves recognition for the quality of this final, and we won because we stayed focused.”
The decisive moment of the match came courtesy of Ahmed Hamdi’s first-half strike, which ultimately secured the victory for the White Knights. Despite the narrow margin, Gomes emphasized the collective effort and mental fortitude displayed by his squad over both legs of the final.
Gomes was effusive in his praise for Zamalek’s passionate supporters, who created an electrifying atmosphere that he believes played a pivotal role in their success. “The fans were unbelievably fantastic,” he said. “They drove the players on and were our extra man.”
Having taken charge of the team only in February, the 52-year-old Gomes has quickly established himself as a key figure at Zamalek. His immediate success has not only endeared him to the fans but also set the stage for future ambitions.
With the CAF Super Cup on the horizon, Gomes is already eyeing further continental glory.
“I would prefer to win the CAF Super Cup, regardless of the opponent we face in the final,” he stated confidently. The upcoming Super Cup clash will see Zamalek pitted against either Al Ahly or Esperance, two of Africa’s most formidable clubs.
Gomes expressed his commitment to the club and his desire to continue building on this latest success. “I am happy to be Zamalek’s coach. I am under contract with the club and am now focused on preparing the team for our next Egyptian Premier League match against Modern Future.”
This victory marks a dream start to Gomes’ tenure in Egyptian football, following his stint with Al Taawoun. His leadership has quickly earned him the admiration of Zamalek’s faithful, and with the team now aiming for more silverware, Gomes’ journey with the Cairo giants promises to be an exciting one.
