Cote d’Ivoire prepares for crucial clashes in World Cup qualifiers

Date:

A decade has passed since Cote d’Ivoire, the newly crowned African champions, last graced the FIFA World Cup™ stage.

Known as the Elephants, this formidable team has participated in the global tournament three times – in Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, and Brazil 2014 – but each campaign ended in the group stages.

With their recent triumph in African football, the Elephants are brimming with confidence as they prepare to continue their FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers.

Leading Group F, they will host Gabon in Korhogo on Friday, June 7, followed by an away match against Kenya in Malawi on Tuesday, June 11. The Elephants have already made a strong start, securing wins against Seychelles and The Gambia in their initial matches.

After missing the last two World Cups in Russia and Qatar, where Morocco made history by reaching the semi-finals, Cote d’Ivoire is determined to return to the world stage. Many view them as strong contenders not just to qualify but to represent Africa with distinction.

Under the leadership of Ivorian legend Emerse Faé, the Elephants have revitalized their performance. Faé, who stepped in following a near-disastrous showing at the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, has steered the team to promising victories in the qualifiers, placing them at the top of their group.

The expansion of the FIFA World Cup to 48 teams, offering Africa nine guaranteed spots and an additional play-off chance, provides a golden opportunity for Cote d’Ivoire to make a significant return.

The squad features a dynamic mix of rising stars and experienced players. Simon Adingra, a young talent, has been impressive, while veterans like Sébastian Haller and Seko Fofana add experience and depth.

Haller’s inspiring return from illness and Fofana’s midfield prowess are expected to be pivotal in the upcoming matches.

The Elephants’ home game against Gabon is a crucial test of their ability to leverage home advantage, with Korhogo set to be a fortress of support from passionate fans.

The subsequent away fixture against Kenya in Lilongwe, Malawi, presents its own challenges, but the team is focused on securing maximum points.

With their recent achievements rekindling national pride, Ivorian fans are eager to see their team return to the FIFA World Cup. The Elephants’ blend of youth and experience, guided by Faé’s strategic acumen, positions them well for success in the qualifiers and beyond.

As they prepare for these key matches, the Elephants aim to carry their continental success onto the global stage, inspiring a new generation of football enthusiasts in Cote d’Ivoire.

The journey is demanding, but the team is ready to charge forward, driven by the hope of reclaiming their place among the world’s football elite.
