The final score was 26-19, with the Aussies initially taking a 7-5 lead at the break. Selvyn Davids’ early try was cancelled out by a converted try from Nathan Lawson, which stemmed from a restart error. However, the Springbok Sevens took control of the match in the second half.
Zain Davids scored two quick tries, both converted by Tristan Leyds, putting the Blitzboks in a commanding position. Their dominance was further solidified when Nick Malouf received a red card for a dangerous tackle on Tiaan Pretorius, giving the Blitzboks a 19-7 lead.
Australia made a late comeback, scoring two tries, one of which was converted, to level the score. In a dramatic finish, the Blitzboks capitalized on the final restart, creating space on the left. Selvyn Davids raced down the touchline before unselfishly passing the ball to Shaun Williams, who scored the match-winning try behind the posts.
Earlier on Saturday, South Africa faced a tough semi-final against France, succumbing to second-half pressure and losing 19-5. The scores were tied 0-0 at the break, with both teams struggling in the rain and displaying nervous, determined defense.
Tristan Leyds gave the Blitzboks a 5-0 lead early in the second half, but France responded with three consecutive tries, spurred on by a full house at the iconic stadium. Local hero Antoine Dupont played a crucial role, scoring two late tries to secure France’s spot in the final.
France went on to win gold, defeating Fiji, the Olympic champions from Rio and Tokyo, with a commanding 28-7 victory in the final.
