Kenyan motorsport sensation Amaan Ganatra has etched his name in the history books as the first Kenyan to secure a podium finish in the British Rallycross Championship.
Competing in the highly competitive Swift Rallycross Juniors category, Amaan claimed third place, showcasing his impressive skills behind the wheel of a 1300cc naturally aspirated car, equipped with a standard gearbox and suspension.
Amaan’s stellar performance in the UK follows his remarkable success in the Kenya National Autocross Championship, where he has already made a significant mark.
His return to the British motorsport scene was met with a level of competition that is among the toughest in the world, as he battled against seasoned European racers in a series known for its intensity and high standards.
Reflecting on his historic podium finish, Amaan said, “It was an experience of a lifetime fighting against my European race adversaries. The level of competition here is out of this world and far more exciting since we’re all driving the same car. This creates a level playing field, making every race unpredictable and thrilling.”
He added, “In Kenya, the competition isn’t as fierce. But in the UK, with everyone in identical cars, it really comes down to skill, strategy, and split-second decisions.”
Driving a Suzuki Swift, Amaan found the car’s handling much improved compared to last year, which significantly contributed to his success. “The track was more enjoyable, with a great mix of challenges, and the car handled beautifully. It was an all-around better experience, and I’m excited to see what I can achieve in the future,” Amaan noted.
Amaan’s achievement in the British Rallycross Championship reflects not just his talent but also his dedication and hard work. A second-generation driver, Amaan has inherited his passion for motorsport from his father, Altaf Ganatra, and currently races a Mitsubishi Evolution machine. His commitment to the sport extends beyond the track, as he actively engages in other sports, particularly athletics, to maintain peak physical fitness for racing.
The Swift Sport Rallycross Championship, launched in 2010, is designed to level the playing field by putting drivers in equally powered Suzuki Swift Sport vehicles. This format highlights driver skill over technological advantages, making it an ideal platform for up-and-coming racers like Amaan to showcase their talents and gain international exposure. Several former participants have even progressed to compete in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
In addition to his Rallycross success, Amaan has participated in the Cross Kart Championship, organized by WRC Hyundai Motorsport lead driver Thierry Neuville, further underlining his commitment to gaining diverse racing experience.
As Amaan continues to make strides on the international stage, his historic podium finish not only brings pride to Kenya but also sets the stage for a bright future in global motorsport.
