Kenya’s Mary Moraa claims 800m Diamond League Trophy in Brussels

Date:

Mary Moraa, the reigning world champion and Olympic bronze medallist, produced another tactical masterclass to win the 800m Diamond League Trophy on Friday night at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

The Kenyan star clocked a season-best time of 1:56.56, securing victory over Great Britain’s Georgia Bell, who finished second in 1:57.50, while Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin came third in 1:58.94.

Moraa’s trademark finishing kick in the final 100 meters propelled her past Bell, allowing her to reclaim the title and cap off a dominant Diamond League season. The high-flying world champion has only lost one out of the four Diamond League circuits she competed in this year, with wins in Doha, Lausanne, and Zurich.

This victory solidifies Moraa’s status as the queen of the 800m, adding the Diamond League title to her growing list of global achievements, which include the 600m world record she set two weeks ago at the ISTAF Berlin meet, clocking 1:21.63.

In addition to the prestigious Diamond Trophy, Moraa will take home Ksh3.87 million in prize money, while Bell and Goule-Toppin will receive Ksh1.55 million and Ksh903,000, respectively.
