On Friday, the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League action got underway again when Young Africans, the champions of Tanzania, traveled to Ghana to play Medeama in a Group D match.
At the same time, Al Ahly hosted Algeria’s CR Belouizdad in a group match that took place in Cairo.
Young Africans were desperate to win their first group game and needed to score as many points as possible to get out of the danger zone because they hadn’t won since the beginning of the group stage campaign.
But it was not to be for the visitors, as in the 27th minute they gave up a penalty that Jonathan Sonwah converted to give the Ghanaians the lead.
Relentlessly pushing forward despite the setback, the East Africans equalized the score just before halftime through a goal from Pacome Zouzoua in the 39th minute.
Following the break, both teams tried to take the lead by sending players forward, but they were stopped by strong defenses, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the Northern African match, both teams shared the spoils as CR Belouizdad held the reigning champions to a scoreless draw in their Group D match at the top of the table, which was held in Cairo.
Even though there were no goals, it was still a very entertaining match between two excellent teams that was very tactical.
Group D stands as it is after the two results, with Young Africans at the bottom with two points and Ahly leading the group with five, followed by CR Belouizdad and Medeama, both on four.
