Eight teams, one dream: The fight for Africa Women’s Basketball League title begins

Date:

The Africa Women’s Basketball League (AWBL) Quarter-Finals in Alexandria, Egypt, are set to be a showcase of talent and determination, with eight teams vying for the prestigious title.

Among these, Alexandria Sporting Club and Inter Clube stand out with their history of winning the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women (ACCW) trophy.

The first quarter-final match features Universite de Douala against Rwanda Energy Group (REG). Douala, in their first continental competition, faces a formidable REG team that has a perfect 4-0 record in Group B.

REG, with an impressive average of 90.5 points per game, contrasts sharply with Douala’s 55 points per game. Key players include Tiffany Mitchell and Destiney Philoxy from REG, and Cynthia Amayaba from Douala.

The Kenyan derby between Equity Bank Hawks and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) promises to be one of the most thrilling matches of the series. Both teams have had numerous encounters in domestic competitions, but this AWBL match carries significant weight.

KPA enters with a 3-1 record, while the Hawks hold a 2-2 record. Players to watch are Victoria Reynolds, Madina Okot, and Hilda Indasi from KPA, and Malu Grace from the Hawks.

In another quarter-final, Alexandria Sporting Club, with a dominant performance in Group A, faces Overdose Up Station. ASC, the reigning African champions, are the favorites, but Overdose Up Station aims to create a major upset.

The final match of the night features Nigeria Customs against five-time African champions Inter Clube. Customs, back in the continental scene after two decades, face a seasoned Inter Clube team. This match is a new challenge for Customs, while Inter Clube looks to reclaim their African title glory.

These matches not only promise intense competition but also the chance for teams and players to etch their names in the annals of African women’s basketball history.
