AFCON 2023: Nigeria equals Egypt’s semi-final feat with 16th appearance

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have etched their name in the annals of African football history once again as they secure a spot in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON for an impressive 16th time, equalling the record held by Egypt.

The Eagles soared into the semi-finals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Angola, courtesy of Ademola Lookman’s decisive strike.

With this latest feat, Nigeria joins Egypt at the summit of the list of countries with the most appearances in the last four of the prestigious continental tournament.

The Super Eagles’ consistent performance in the AFCON has solidified their status as perennial contenders on the African football stage.

However, despite their remarkable semi-final appearances, Nigeria has only lifted the AFCON trophy three times, a tally eclipsed by Egypt’s record-breaking seven titles.

Following closely behind are Cameroon with five championships and Ghana with four, underscoring the fierce competition for continental supremacy.

As José Peseiro and his men gear up for their semi-final clash against South Africa on Wednesday, 7th February 2024, the stakes are higher than ever.

With hopes of booking their 8th final appearance in the competition, Nigeria aims to edge closer to Egypt’s record while surpassing the achievements of their fellow African football powerhouses.

In their quest for AFCON glory, the Super Eagles will draw inspiration from their rich footballing heritage and the unwavering support of millions of passionate fans across the continent.

As the semi-final showdown looms large, Nigeria remains steadfast in their pursuit of footballing excellence, poised to leave an indelible mark on the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 and etch their name in the pantheon of African football legends.
