CAF Champions League: Tunisian giants Esperance through to quarters

Date:

Esperance of Tunisia has successfully clinched a spot in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, following a narrow 1-0 victory over Sudan’s Al Hilal.

The crucial Group C match, held on Saturday, saw Esperance secure their advancement with a solid performance that highlighted their aspirations for continental dominance.

The game’s defining moment came in the 22nd minute when Esperance’s seasoned defender, Yassine Meriah, found the net.

Meriah’s goal, a result of a precise pass from midfielder Yanis Sassi, proved decisive in a match that saw the Tunisian side demonstrate both tactical discipline and resilience.

Despite Al Hilal’s attempts to level the score, particularly in the second half where they dominated possession, Esperance’s goalkeeper Amanallah Memmich stood firm, thwarting any efforts from the Sudanese club.

Esperance’s victory brings their points tally to 11, securing them the second position in Group C, just behind Angola’s Petro Atletico.

The result not only underscores Esperance’s status as a formidable force in African club football but also marks the end of the road for Al Hilal, who exit the tournament with their heads held high after a commendable debut.

As the draw for the quarter-finals looms, Esperance, with a rich history in the competition, will be aiming to add another Champions League title to their illustrious cabinet.

Their performance against Al Hilal sends a clear message to the remaining teams in the tournament: Esperance is a team of quality, determination, and ambition, ready to challenge for the ultimate prize in African club football.
