Paris 2024: Morocco, Egypt and Mali learn Olympics football group opponents

Date:

The roadmap to the men’s football competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics has been officially unveiled, setting the stage for an exhilarating showdown among the world’s footballing elite.

Among the contenders are three African nations – Morocco, Egypt, and Mali – each poised to make their mark on the global stage.

Reigning champions of the TotalEnergies CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco finds itself in a tantalising Group B, alongside South American powerhouse Argentina, Ukraine, and an Asian nation set to emerge from the Asian Cup.

The Atlas Lions kick off their Olympic campaign against Argentina, followed by a clash with the Asian representatives before concluding their group stage journey against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Egypt, runners-up at the TotalEnergies CAF U-23 AFCON, has been drawn in Group C, where they will lock horns with Spain, Dominican Republic, and the runners-up of the Asian Cup.

With a storied footballing history, including a semi-final appearance in 1964, the Pharaohs are eager to showcase their prowess on the grandest stage of them all.

Bronze medalists in the last edition of the Olympics, Mali finds itself in Group D, pitted against the champions of the Asian Cup, Paraguay, and Israel.

With a talented squad and aspirations of securing another podium finish, the Eagles of Mali are gearing up for a fierce battle against their group opponents.

Another spot for Africa?

As the draw unfolded, there emerged a possibility of a fourth African representative at the Paris showpiece. Guinea, who finished fourth at the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, stands on the cusp of qualification.

Their fate hangs in the balance as they await the outcome of the fourth-placed finishers at the Asian Cup. Should the stars align in their favor, Guinea would join hosts France, the United States of America, and New Zealand in Group A, setting the stage for an intriguing battle on the field.

The stage is set for a thrilling spectacle as the world’s finest footballers converge in Paris to compete for Olympic glory.

The tournament’s opening match, scheduled for 24 July, will witness hosts France take on the United States of America at the iconic Vélodrome stadium in Marseille, marking the beginning of a month-long celebration of footballing excellence.

As the countdown to kick-off begins, fans around the globe await with bated breath, eager to witness the drama, passion, and unforgettable moments that only the Olympics can deliver.

For Morocco, Egypt, Mali, and potentially Guinea, the journey to Paris represents an opportunity to etch their names in the annals of footballing history and inspire a continent with their sporting prowess.
