CAF Champions League: Al Ahly, Esperance, Sundowns, and Mazembe secure exciting semifinal berths


In a thrilling weekend of African football, the continent’s premier clubs have secured their spots in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

Al Ahly of Egypt, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, and TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo showcased their prowess in the quarter-finals, setting the stage for captivating semi-final clashes later this month.

Defending champions and powerhouse Al Ahly comfortably booked their semi-final berth by defeating Simba SC of Tanzania in Cairo.

The record titleholders, led by coach Pitso Mosimane, are eyeing yet another continental triumph as they navigate their way through the knockout stages.

Esperance Sportive de Tunis faced a tough challenge against Asec Mimosas from Cote d’Ivoire but emerged victorious to advance to the semi-finals.

The Tunisian giants, four-time winners of the Champions League, displayed resilience and determination to keep their title ambitions alive.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns, winners of the 2025/16 African Football League, had to dig deep against Tanzania’s Young Africans to secure their place in the semi-finals. The South African outfit, coached by Rulani Mokwena, will be aiming to replicate their past success in the competition.

TP Mazembe delivered a standout performance by claiming a 2-1 away victory against Atletico Petroleos of Luanda, following a goalless first leg. The five-time Champions League winners from DR Congo exhibited their pedigree and experience to progress to the last four.

Looking ahead, the semi-finals promise exhilarating encounters as Al Ahly will face TP Mazembe in a clash between two African football giants. Esperance Sportive de Tunis, on the other hand, will lock horns with Mamelodi Sundowns in what is expected to be a fiercely contested tie.

The semi-finals are scheduled to take place on a home-and-away basis, with the first legs set for 19-20 April 2024 and the return fixtures on 26-27 April 2024.
