Uganda is set to make a compelling mark at the season-opening World Athletics Diamond League in Xiamen, China on 20th April, with four accomplished athletes poised to showcase their prowess on the international stage.
Confirming the participation of Uganda’s contingent, Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), expressed confidence in the selected quartet comprising Dan Kibet, Oscar Chelimo, Winnie Nanyondo, and Peruth Chemutai. Their presence underscores Uganda’s growing prominence in global athletics.
One of the athletes generating significant buzz is Peruth Chemutai, fresh from securing a silver medal at the African Games in Ghana. Chemutai, a gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics in the 3,000m steeplechase, will spearhead Uganda’s campaign in this challenging event. Her showdown in Xiamen promises excitement as she faces off against formidable rivals like Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech and Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew.
“I have prepared well and I’m looking forward to the race in China,” shared Chemutai, reflecting her determination to shine on the Diamond League circuit.
In the women’s 1,500m, Winnie Nanyondo will aim to make her presence felt, competing against seasoned runners such as Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon and Ethiopia’s Habitam Alemu. Meanwhile, Dan Kibet and Oscar Chelimo will take on the grueling men’s 5,000m event, showcasing Uganda’s depth in long-distance running.
Otuchet emphasized the significance of these appearances, noting that the exposure gained from Diamond League races will be instrumental in preparing athletes for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Following the Xiamen leg, attention will shift to Suzhou, China, for the next stop of the Diamond League on April 27, highlighting Uganda’s engagement in this prestigious global series. The athletes’ performances in these high-profile competitions will serve as valuable stepping stones toward their Olympic ambitions.
With the Diamond League spanning until mid-September, athletes like Chemutai, Nanyondo, Kibet, and Chelimo have ample opportunities to showcase their skills and fine-tune their form on the international stage. Their journey in Xiamen marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for Ugandan athletics, characterized by ambition, talent, and determination.
As the athletes set their sights on Xiamen, Uganda’s sporting community eagerly anticipates their stellar performances, rooting for success on the Diamond League circuit and beyond.
