Nairobi witnessed a thrilling display of athletic prowess at the 2024 Kip Keino Classic, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, where Kenya’s Mary Moraa and Wiseman Were emerged as standout performers in the 800m and 400m events respectively.

The event, held at the Stade Olympique de Nairobi, was graced with unexpected rains towards the end of the evening, adding an extra layer of drama to an already electrifying atmosphere.

Mary Moraa, the reigning world champion, delivered a commanding performance in the women’s 800m, much to the delight of the home crowd. Paced by her sister Sarah Moraa, Mary stormed through the first 400m in approximately 56 seconds.

Maintaining her composure on the second lap, Moraa seized control of the race, accelerating down the home straight to cross the finish line in a scintillating meeting record of 1:57.96.

The spectators were on their feet as Moraa showcased her dominance, leaving Vivian Chebet Kiprotich (1:58.26) and Nelly Jepkosgei (1:58.93) trailing behind in second and third place respectively, both achieving personal bests.

Wiseman Were’s Commanding Performance in Men’s 400m

In the men’s 400m, Wiseman Were Mukhobe made his mark with an outstanding meeting record of 48.57, setting a national event standard in the process.

Were’s performance was a testament to his skill and determination, demonstrating his mastery over the one-lap sprint.

Were’s victory was a highlight of the day, showcasing Kenya’s prowess in the short sprints and igniting excitement among the local supporters.

Other Thrilling Performances at the Kip Keino Classic

The Kip Keino Classic was filled with exceptional displays across various disciplines. Ethan Katzberg of Canada stole the show in the men’s hammer throw, launching the implement to a remarkable distance of 84.38m – the farthest mark achieved since 2008.

Katzberg’s stellar performance earned him a well-deserved victory and positioned him ninth on the world all-time list.

Janee Kassanavoid of the USA secured victory in the women’s hammer throw with a fifth-round effort of 75.99m, showcasing her prowess in the field events.

In the men’s 800m, Emmanuel Wanyonyi thrilled the crowds with a world-leading time of 1:43.57, leaving behind a strong field that included the likes of Timothy Cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang. Wanyonyi’s scintillating performance exemplified the high level of competition at the Kip Keino Classic.

The men’s 200m witnessed a fierce battle between Courtney Lindsey of the USA and Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, with Lindsey clinching victory in a world-leading time of 19.71 (-1.5m/s).

Kenny Bednarek, the Olympic silver medallist from the USA, triumphed in the men’s 100m with a time of 9.91 (2.2m/s), showcasing his sprinting prowess on the international stage.
