South Africa Springbok Women’s Sevens team showcased their prowess on Friday with commanding victories over Argentina and Belgium in Madrid, setting the stage for a Pool B decider against Brazil on Saturday.
Competing in the HSBC SVNS play-off tournament at Civitas Metropolitano Stadium, the South Africans demonstrated composure and clinical finishing in both of their matches.
In their opening match against Argentina, the Springboks got off to a flying start. Nadine Roos crossed the try line within the first minute, giving South Africa an early lead.
Maria Tshiremba added to the score with a well-executed try, putting the Springbok Women ahead 12-0 at halftime.
Although Argentina managed to score early in the second half, reducing the deficit to five points, Roos and Tshiremba each added another try, securing a comfortable win for South Africa.
The match against Belgium further highlighted South Africa’s dominance. Roos was again at the forefront, adding three more tries to her tournament tally.
The South Africans displayed a high level of intensity and executed beautifully worked tries, applying enough defensive pressure to force their opponents into mistakes.
Despite Belgium managing to score a try while Sizophila Solontsi was in the sin bin for a dangerous tackle, the Springbok Women’s Sevens maintained control and emerged victorious.
Roos expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging the momentum gained heading into the second day of the tournament.
“We had some very close matches so far this year, with one score the difference in the last two matches we played,” said Roos. “We take some good momentum into tomorrow, but will have to be at our very best to beat Brazil and finish top of the pool.”
The decisive match against Brazil, who also defeated Argentina and Belgium on day one, is scheduled to kick off at 13:51 on Saturday.
The outcome will determine the top team in Pool B and set the tone for the remainder of the tournament. The Springbok Women’s Sevens are poised to continue their winning streak, aiming to showcase their skill and determination against a formidable Brazilian side.
