KCB successfully defends Kenya Volleyball Federation League title

KCB Women’s Volleyball Team successfully defended their Kenya Volleyball Federation League title after dismantling Kenya Prisons 3-0 in an entertaining tie-breaker match at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Sunday.

The bankers made it two in a row after seeing off their opponents by sets of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-21 to seal their victory in front of their raucous fans, asserting their dominance in the local volleyball scene.

Speaking after the victory, KCB Head Coach Japheth Munala said: “I am so proud of the team for showcasing incredible grit to come from a 3-0 defeat on Friday to winning the local league title, making it two in a row. This is indeed a testament to our hard work throughout the season. We thank our sponsor KCB for always believing in us and for ensuring that the team could compete. We also thank Kenya Prisons for putting up a great fight.”

The three-leg final saw KCB lose 3-0 (6-24, 25-16, and 25-17 in the first encounter on Friday before bouncing back yesterday with a resounding 3-0 (28-26, 26-24, 25-21) win to set the date for today’s tie-breaker match.

Outside hitter Juliana Namutira who was sensational in today’s decider showcased her class throughout the three sets with her deadly attacks that made it difficult for Prisons to bounce back.

Namutira was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season following her impressive performances, on the other hand, Esther Mutinda was named the best setter while Mariam Musa was crowned the best Outsider Hitter.

“I am so happy with the team’s win today. It is incredible to share this victory with an amazing group of girls. I am also proud of my personal achievement as the Most Valuable Player, it could not have been possible without the team’s support. We now shift focus to next season,” noted an ecstatic Juliana Namutira.

The victory comes as a relief for the Japheth Munala-led charges who finished fourth at the 2024 African Club Championship in Egypt, the gaffer believes the team is ready to contest on the continental stage after today’s win.
