As the Springboks prepare to commence their 2024 international season, No. 8 Evan Roos is gearing up for a tough encounter against Wales on Saturday at Twickenham.
Roos, who last played in the green and gold during a World Cup warm-up match against Argentina in August, is eager to earn his sixth Test cap and make a significant impact.
The Springboks concluded their final training session in Pretoria on Tuesday, ahead of their departure to London on Wednesday night. Coach Rassie Erasmus has named a squad of 30 players for the tour, with those not selected returning home to focus on their domestic commitments.
Roos expressed his excitement and determination to contribute to the team’s success. “It feels fantastic to be back in the team, and there’s a lot of excitement about the upcoming match,” said Roos.
“We’re focused on building on the foundation laid over the past six years, and it’s crucial to start this season with a strong performance.”
Roos will be part of an impressive loose trio alongside Rugby World Cup winners Kwagga Smith and captain Pieter-Steph du Toit. The Springbok forwards include seven players from the victorious 2023 World Cup squad, adding significant experience and strength to the lineup.
Roos commented on the quality of his teammates, saying, “Playing with these Rugby World Cup winners in the pack makes my job easier. Knowing these guys for the past three years has made it more comfortable each time I’m in camp.”
Roos is well aware of the challenge posed by Wales, despite their underwhelming Six Nations campaign where they secured only one victory. He noted the similarities between the Welsh and South Africans in their approach to the game.
“Wales are a lot like us; they work hard and are humble. We expect them to give their all for the entire 80 minutes,” Roos explained.
He added, “Both teams are willing to go to great lengths, so we’re expecting a real battle up front. Wales have a very physical pack, so it’s going to be a true test this weekend.”
The Springboks are keen to start 2024 on a positive note, with an important season ahead that includes the Castle Lager Incoming Series, Castle Lager Rugby Championship, and a challenging tour of the UK in November.
Roos emphasized the significance of a strong start: “This Test is important for setting the tone for the rest of the year. We need to implement what we’ve been working on in training and aim for a win to make it special for the debutants.”
Making their Test debuts are Jordan Hendrikse (flyhalf) and Edwill van der Merwe (wing), who have been included in the starting lineup. Ben-Jason Dixon (utility forward) and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (utility back) will come off the replacements bench.
