Kenya Sevens squad announced for Africa Men’s Sevens tournament

Date:

The Kenya Rugby Union has unveiled the Kenya Sevens squad that will represent the nation at the upcoming Africa Men’s 7s tournament, set to take place in Mauritius on 29-30 June and 6-7 July.

With the primary Kenya 7s team focused on preparations for the upcoming Olympics, the Morans, Kenya’s development team, will carry the country’s hopes in this prestigious competition.

The Morans squad features a mix of seasoned players and emerging talents, led by captain Benson Salem Adoyo.

One of the notable returns is Edmund Anya, who last played for the national side when Shujaa was relegated from the 2023 World 7s Series. Anya has missed several tournaments due to commitments in the United Kingdom but is now back to bolster the squad.

Victor Mola, who has been in scintillating form, is another exciting inclusion. Mola was named the top try scorer at the Great Rift 10s and previously clinched the Most Promising Player award at the Dala 7s.

He is joined by his Strathmore Leos teammate Richard Liva, adding more firepower to the squad.

Amon Wamalwa makes his much-anticipated return after his significant role in helping Kenya 7s qualify for the World Cup in 2022. Joining him are Joel Inzuga and Gabriel Ayimba, both eager to make their mark in the tournament.

Brian Mutua, part of the 13-man squad that secured World Core status, brings his experience and skill to the team.

Alongside him, the squad sees the return of Denis Abukuse, William Mwanji, and Festus Shiasi, all of whom last featured for the national team in the first leg of the Challenger Series in Dubai.

Kenya headlines Pool A and will face Madagascar, Nigeria, and hosts Mauritius in the pool stages. The team is poised to deliver strong performances, with a blend of youth and experience that promises to make them a formidable force in the tournament.

As the Morans gear up for the tournament, there is a palpable sense of optimism and determination within the squad. Their preparation and focus on delivering their best performance will be crucial in ensuring Kenya’s continued dominance in African rugby.

The Africa Men’s 7s tournament not only provides a platform for the Morans to showcase their talent but also serves as a critical step in the development and depth-building of Kenyan rugby.

The squad’s performance in Mauritius will be closely watched as they aim to make their nation proud and set the stage for future successes on the international stage.

With their eyes firmly set on the prize, the Morans are ready to take on their African counterparts, bringing with them the hopes and aspirations of a rugby-loving nation.
